Biopsy Under Tomosynthesis Guidance

Biopsy Under Tomosynthesis Guidance

Biopsy Guided by Tomosynthesis:

Lesions that cannot be detected on conventional mammograms are identified using tomosynthesis digital mammography. When suspicious areas detected on tomosynthesis cannot be visualized clearly or at all with other imaging methods such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI, biopsy of these areas should be performed under tomosynthesis guidance.

Recently developed software and hardware systems enable biopsy with vacuum-assisted needles guided by tomosynthesis images. With these high-tech systems, suspicious findings visible on tomosynthesis images can be biopsied with high accuracy (tissue sampling).

If biopsy results indicate malignancy, necessary surgical procedures are performed for the patients; if the biopsy results are benign, patients are spared from unnecessary operations.
