What is the prevalence of prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer among men. Throughout their lifetime, 1 in 6 men (16%) will develop prostate cancer. Early diagnosis is very important in prostate cancer. Early detection increases the success rate of treatment.
How is prostate cancer diagnosed?
Prostate cancer diagnosis is made by detecting elevated blood PSA levels followed by an ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. However, even if the biopsy result is negative for cancer, persistently high or rising PSA values raise ongoing suspicion of cancer.
In such cases, multiparametric prostate MRI, a newer imaging technique, provides significant additional information.
